Debating Society Attends Annual Debate at the British Chamber of Commerce

On Tuesday, December 8th, four UNYP students from the UNYP Debating Society attended The British Chamber of Commerce Annual Debate 2009. The debated notion was: This House believes that a national energy champion should put public interest before profit. Defending the motion was Erik Best of the Fleet Sheet and Final Word. Opposing the motion was Alan Svoboda, who many regard as an architect of ČEZ’s remarkable profitability. Each was supported by a student debater selected from eight Czech universities in competitive qualifying rounds held by Charles University Debating Society.  The debate was in English and the audience had the chance to put questions to the debaters. After a tough fight the debate was won by the opposition. All attending students agreed that the debate was very interesting and they hope that next year more UNYP students will attend and experience a formal debate held according to Westminster rules.
