Prague’s best cafes for a healthy egg breakfast

Eggs are among the most nourishing of foods, providing nearly all the vitamins and minerals you need to give your best academic performance. Eating high-protein foods such as eggs for breakfast keeps you feeling full for longer than a bread or cereal breakfast, so you don’t eat so many calories for lunch. According to the 2015-2020 Edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, it is safe for most people to eat a couple of eggs two or three times per week accompanied by various vegetables, and they are suggested as an essential ingredient of an overall balanced diet.

Unlike some Prague universities, UNYP is conveniently located in Vinohrady, the heart of the city’s gastronomic district.

Your day at the University of New York in Prague needs to start off with a fantastic healthy breakfast. If you are swamped with homework and simply have no time to cook for yourself, the cafes of Vinohrady offer a morning meal guaranteed to satisfy, Monday through Sunday. From vegetarian omelets to the full English, we’ve scoured Prague in search of the places that every Study Abroad student should add to their bucket list. Whether you’re hoping to soak up the sun at the outdoor seating area, find a quiet corner to revise your lectures or get a table for an extended Sunday breakfast with your friends, we’ve got you covered! These are the most essential breakfast spots around the neighborhood.

Kavarna Zanzibar

A few minutes from UNYP, this neighborhood spot stands out for its friendly service and an outstanding omelet with green asparagus and goat cheese. Zanzibar is a buzzing cafe with Vinohrady locals chatting over home-made lemonade at the tables out front.

Bistro 8

Located in hip Zizkov, Bistro 8 is the face of a fast-changing neighborhood. Their menu offers a range of egg dishes with a unique twist. Bistro 8’s goal is to use local ingredients from sustainable sources. Try their breakfast taco with a fried egg, black beans, guacamole, tomato salsa, and cheddar cheese.

Spizirna 1902

Spizirna 1902 is one of the most Instagrammed cafes in the area, but its handsome interior is by no means the only reason to book a table for your next breakfast. Get an omelet with sun-dried tomatoes, cheddar cheese, rye bread, and a green salad, or their avocado toast with a soft-boiled egg, roasted tomatoes, and arugula.

Café Jen

Everything on the small but perfectly-formed menu is done well, using excellent ingredients including unusual “Breakfast of Champions” combinations with free-range eggs, and outstanding porridge with seasonal fruit. Have you ever tried Shakshouka? Café Jen is the place to go for this classic dish of eggs poached in a spicy sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers, and onions.

Marthy’s Kitchen

Named after its owner, Marthy’s Kitchen is a favorite breakfast spot for Vinohrady-based expats.  Try their signature Eggs Benedict or Eggs Florentine, served as all-day breakfasts at the weekend.

La Bottega Gastronomica

If you’re looking for a more refined breakfast experience, La Bottega is a winner with its Italian charm and cozy setting. Although a La Bottega breakfast is an indulgence at over 250 CZK, the options are exquisite and filling, and you deserve a treat after the midterms! Try their scrambled eggs with Prosciutto Cotto and spring onion.

Cafe Neustadt

No round-up of Prague’s best egg breakfast places would be complete without a mention of Cafe Neustadt. Famed for its bohemian atmosphere and excellent coffee, Cafe Neustadt is hidden away in the courtyard of the New Town Hall. Prague’s sunny spring days are perfect for getting a table outside and enjoying your morning coffee while gazing at the greenery. Café Neustadt will serve your eggs fried, scrambled or as an omelet with toppings of your choice.
