5 of the best: Prague coffee shops where you can get some work done

The midterms are finally behind us, and perhaps you need a change of scenery and some good coffee to keep you motivated through the rest of the semester. UNYP’s new library is convenient, well-stocked and quiet, but some people find that a little background buzz helps us focus.  Luckily, Prague has a great café culture, and some of the city’s best cafés and coffee shops are located near our campus, so you can order a fourth-wave coffee, connect to the Wi-Fi and crack on with some important work. Whether you are balancing work and your Master’s or MBA program, getting your Bachelor’s degree, or enjoying a semester abroad at UNYP, be sure to check out these Prague cafés and coffee shops.

Our top 5 cafés for students in Prague

Monolok in Vinohrady is popular among students and freelancers, and you can work there without feeling that you are outstaying your welcome. They know what they are doing when it comes to coffee, offering V60 and Aeropress brews, espressos from their La Marzocco machine and even Japanese vacuum coffee, made at your table with equipment that seems more at home in a chemistry lab than a coffee shop. If you get there early, you can also enjoy a healthy breakfast.

Kavárna Pražírna is a café-roastery with a great selection of coffee. Situated at IP Pavlova station, just six minutes from UNYP, it is a very cozy spot that serves soup, toasties, and sandwiches throughout the day. Kavárna Pražírna is a relaxed place, especially in the large back room, but it does get busy at breakfast time and after 18.00.

The Miners Coffeeshop opened a little less than a year ago, and has already become a favorite with the local hipsters and digital nomads. They set up their own roastery in pursuit of original and delicate flavors, and serve specialty coffee exclusively alongside fresh cakes, brownies, and a delicious brunch menu (before 14.00). There are plenty of power sockets, and a chilled-out vibe to get your homework done.

SmetanaQ is a spacious and well-lit café-bistro, located at Smetanovo Nábřeží on the east bank of the Vltava River. You can get there in no time by taking tram 22 from IP Pavlova. There’s plenty of seating and superb food, plus live piano music in the evenings. The floor-to-ceiling windows make SmetanaQ the ultimate spot for enjoying the view of Prague Castle on the other side of the river.

Finally, Oliver’s Coffee Cup is a tiny oasis in the middle of downtown. You’ll find this airy café on the second floor of one of the old Wenceslas Square department stores, near the National Museum. Oliver’s is a friendly, casual space to study over a cup of coffee or the delicious homemade lavender lemonade. Keep in mind that this is a popular place for lunchtime business meetings, so it gets pretty busy around noon.
