Europe’s best student discounts

The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is reason enough to study abroad in Europe. The ISIC card is usually issued with your regular student ID, but it is the only internationally recognized student ID card, which means you get access to 42,000 discounts in 125 different countries. This includes discounts on restaurants, travel, accommodation, entertainment, and much more! Here is a look at the best ways to get the most of your student discount while you’re studying abroad.

Local discounts

There are 2,600 discounts in the Czech Republic alone. These discounts include everything from local bookstores to weekend passes at ski resorts. If you need to buy a new adapter for your notebook or new headphones, you can use your ISIC card in Alza’s online store and receive 15 percent off. If you need to grab some junk food while you’re cramming for finals, fast food chains McDonald’s, KFC, and Subway all offer student deals. There are even healthier options, such as Prašád, as well. Many smaller theaters and art galleries will offer student entry, so don’t forget to flash that card at the cashier. Check the ISIC’s Czech website for more local discounts.

Traveling

Exploring nearby cities and countries is one of the best things about studying abroad in Europe. Prague is only hours away from other major cities like Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Rome, and Barcelona. With an ISIC card, your travel costs don’t have to be as expensive as your tuition. Most railway and bus lines, as well as airlines, will have student discounts available for ISIC cardholders. Student discounts are also offered at 140 hostels and hotels in Europe. The cost of traveling and accommodation aside, you can even save on special tour packages and travel experiences. For example, you can get up to 10 percent off on whale watching or trekking tours in Iceland. Make sure to check the ISIC website or a travel tracker site for some discounts, since not all airlines or bus agencies will list student discounts.

Museums and monuments

Almost every major museum and monument in Europe has a student discount, which means you’ll be able to save some good money while visiting some of the most beautiful places in the world. Whether you’re visiting beautiful cathedrals like La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, looking at masterpieces in museums like Musee du Louvre in Paris, or getting a bird’s perspective of the city on the London Eye, all these experiences will seem a little richer knowing that you saved some euros.

Food, shopping, and entertainment

Once you’re out and exploring new destinations, you might think that the savings end. Not so. The ISIC card offers great deals on several restaurants, bars, and shops around the world. If you’re in Copenhagen, you can enjoy 10 percent off at Bronx Burger Bar and Urban Outfitters. If you’re in Dublin, you can grab some Mexican food and listen to music at Burritos & Blues for only 8 Euro. If you want to party in Barcelona, you can get 20 percent off their Night Card, which offers free access to many nightclubs in the city. No matter what country you’re in, Hard Rock Cafe offers 20 percent off for all students.
