University of New York in Prague launches partnership with IAU College and hosts them for the first time! Just before the spring semester, UNYP hosted IAU College, a group of study abroad students visiting Europe. UNYP is one of the partner universities that host the group through their travels and studies during their stay in the Czech Republic, and we were happy to have them filling our campus in between the semester break.

The partnership started after a happy coincidence that put them in touch with the UNYP Dean of Academic Development, William Bernard, Ph.D.  “We start the cooperation with UNYP last year when UNYP kindly offered us the classrooms for our courses,” says Barbara Castaldo, professor of literature at Duke University and Loyola University, who is traveling with the group.

Each year, the IAU College sets a theme for the students and this year was “The great cities of Europe”. What is great about this study abroad program, is that students have the opportunity to not only study in the classrooms but also discover European cities and different cultures. “It’s a major culture shock for most of the students. They are learning about the countries, but also about themselves,” explains Leight Smith, Dean of IAU College, “one of the most important things is that students might not remember the dates or the name of the person, but they remember the experience, how they felt and how it changed their perspective.”

The group is made up of more than 20 students from different American universities and the students choose from four educational paths during their travels with the program; Communications, Literature, Cross-Cultural Studies or European Studies.  The European tour will take the students to Rome, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Paris, London and Prague over a three week period.

IAU College was founded in 1957 in France to provide an international education in European and Mediterranean history, languages, cultures, and contemporary issues. IAU College offers traveling seminars as well as study abroad and degree programs with campuses in France, Spain and Morocco and partner universities and institutions all over the world.
