Media Accountability Conference in the Eyes of UNYP Communication Students

On November 8th the Communications department at UNYP hosted an international conference on media accountability. The conference, entitled Media Accountability at the Crossroads: European Challenges and Perspectives, was organized by the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Alpen-Adria- Universität Klagenfurt, and the Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism. It was held as a pre-conference of the European Communication Research and Education Association’s (ECREA) 6th European Communication Conference.

The conference at UNYP featured 40 professors from 17 countries participating, with 16 papers presented. Themes ranged from classifications of journalistic regulation models in Europe, to accountability practices and the role of civil society actors in media regulation processes, to self-regulation approaches.

One of the highlights of the conference was the paper presented by Dr. Eva-Maria Svensson and Dr. Maria Edstrom from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Dr. Andrew Kenyon from the University of Melbourne, Australia, concerning market-driven claims on media freedom. The conference also served as a launch for their new book ‘Blurring the Lines: Market-driven and Democracy-driven Freedom of Expression,’ published by Nordicom. UNYP Communication Studies Society participants, as well as the UNYP Library received copies from the authors.

A video and pictures from the conference by Communication Studies Society members can be found at the club’s Facebook page.
