UNYP students attended the London International Model United Nations (LIMUN) conference held at Imperial College, London

February, 2015 — Eight UNYP student representatives attended the London International Model United Nations (LIMUN) conference held at Imperial College, London. The group was made up of students with prior Model United Nations (MUN) experience as well as those experiencing MUN for the first time.

Each student, also referred to as a delegate, took part of a specific committee, for example; UNICEF or Commonwealth of Nations.  The committees had two topics which were then debated at the conference where every student represented the viewpoints of a particular country. UNYP delegates represented countries such as the Russian Federation, Vietnam, Australia and Indonesia to name a few for such committees as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNRHC).

On the first day in London, the group used some scheduled down time to tour around London to admire the city and its cultural and historical monuments and attended the LIMUN opening ceremony. In the evening the UNYP delegates were split up into committees to start sessions where topics were agreed opening speeches delivered. The first evening was concluded with a delegate mixer where student delegates had the chance to meet fellow students from around the world.

The second day came with an early start and LIMUN committee sessions lasted the entire day.  During the sessions each student delegate had a unique experience due in part to the various countries and agencies represented. At the end of day two was the Delegate’s Ball or the option to explore all that London has to offer.

The final day at LIMUN involved heavy debate where we attempted to close the discussions on the various committee topics by drafting a resolution paper. Once final resolutions were drafted and voted on, the LIMUN ended with a closing ceremony.

UNYP students have commented positively on the experience as it was a chance for them to see a new city, meet new people, debate international current events and take part in a recognized and prestigious Model United Nations event. All students mentioned that they look forward to attending future conferences in other countries.
