Celebrating Academic Research Excellence at UNYP

We are proud to share a newly published research article co-authored by Ondrej Dvoulety and Radka MacGregor Pelikánová, Research Lead of the UNYP Communication and Media School Research Center.

The paper, “Relationship between patenting and economic development, message implied by the Czechoslovakian experience from 1918 to 1991,” has been published in Innovation: The European Journal of Social Science Research, a Web of Science–indexed, peer-reviewed journal.

Using a unique long-term dataset of patent records and economic indicators, the study explores how innovation activity, measured through patents, is linked to economic development over more than seventy years. The findings show that higher levels of patenting are associated with stronger economic growth, while also highlighting that some types of patents matter more than others. The research is especially valuable for its focus on innovation in a socialist and post-communist context, an area that is still rarely examined in empirical studies.

The study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together economists, statisticians, historians, and intellectual property experts to better understand innovation-driven development.
