Faculty Summer Reads: Jana Ter-Akopow Čemusová, Dean of the School of Psychology

Many faculty enjoy a well-earned break over the summer, but for some, it’s also a time for reflection and inspiration. This summer, Jana is delving into the stories of strong women and their families, drawn to characters who uphold individual values even at great personal cost.

“It feels especially inspiring at a time when we sometimes find ourselves complaining or feeling dissatisfied with our own situations. These heroines embody fundamental human values, which they never betrayed—even at the cost of great personal sacrifice.”

📘 One standout title is Dana Němcová: Děj se co děj, nemáte se čeho bát (“Come What May, You Have Nothing to Fear”), a book with personal resonance for Jana:

“I had the privilege of knowing Dana Němcová personally, though unfortunately not in the capacity I would have wished. This book has helped me form a more multidimensional picture of a woman I increasingly admire and deeply respect.”

Also on her list:

📘 Daniel Anýž: Jdu s hlavou vztyčenou (“I Walk With My Head Held High”) — The story of Milada Horáková’s family, another powerful testament to dignity and resistance.

…And a few more, still waiting patiently on her shelf.
