The University of Greater Manchester was formerly known as the University of Bolton. It traces its origins to 1824, when it was established as the Bolton Mechanics’ Institute. The university is located in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

In December 2024, the institution officially changed its name to the University of Greater Manchester. This change reflects a stronger connection to the Greater Manchester region and aims to enhance the University of Bolton’s international recognition.
