Research is at the core of every great university. Alongside teaching and learning, universities play a vital role in advancing knowledge, addressing global challenges, and contributing evidence-based insights that shape the future of higher education.
The University of New York in Prague (UNYP) is proud to announce the publication of new research by David Anthony Procházka, co-authored with Kateřina Bočková, Matúš Guga, and Imran Ahmed Shahzad, in the internationally recognized journal Frontiers in Education. Their article, Academic Leadership Beyond Hierarchy: Balancing Autonomy, Trust, and Collaboration in University Teams, explores how effective academic leadership is evolving to meet the needs of modern universities.
As higher education institutions navigate rapid technological change, internationalization, and increasingly interdisciplinary research, traditional leadership models are being redefined. The study argues that successful university leadership depends not only on formal authority but also on creating environments where trust, collaboration, and academic autonomy can thrive.
The authors identify several principles that contribute to stronger academic leadership and more effective university teams:
Rather than presenting leadership as a top-down process, the research highlights the importance of relationships, shared responsibility, and mutual trust. These findings offer practical insights for university leaders seeking to build resilient institutions that encourage both academic excellence and organizational effectiveness.
This publication reflects UNYP’s ongoing commitment to producing impactful research that contributes to international discussions on higher education. By examining how universities can balance academic freedom with institutional goals, the study provides valuable guidance for educators, researchers, and university leaders working to create more collaborative and innovative academic environments.
As universities continue to adapt to new challenges and opportunities, research such as this helps shape leadership practices that support both institutional success and the advancement of knowledge.
