5 tips for first-year university students

Starting a university is an exciting step in your life. However, the beginning of this journey can be quite stressful, especially if you have just left school or decided to study abroad.

If you’d like a few pointers on making the most of your first year, we’re here to help!

1. Your first year is your best chance to get to know your university

This place will be your new study home for the next few years, so take this opportunity now to explore the surroundings and what the university offers. As well as modern campus facilities, students at the University of New York in Prague have access to a spacious backyard, where students can relax after lectures or enjoy the fresh and tasty options at the on-campus UNYP Café. The UNYP campus is located in the amazing Prague district of Vinohrady, which offers students the ideal conditions for learning and student life!

2. Ask for help when you need it

You will meet hundreds of new people at college – classmates, professors, advisors, recruiters, campus staff. There is nothing wrong with asking for help or advice – in fact, you will look like a person who is interested in self-improvement and a deeper understanding of the task at hand. Reach out to your classmates, lecturers, tutors, and support staff. The UNYP website is another great resource, and the Student Services CenterAcademic Advisors, and Counseling Center are there to help with any questions you might have.

3. Get involved with clubs and events

The UNYP student council organizes clubs and activities for every interest, as well as a diverse range of events. Remember that every person you meet in the university has something to offer you! Social activity can give you great opportunities to get to know new people, expand your network and learn interesting things. If you prefer a more active approach, there are numerous student sports clubs and teams, including floorball, football, volleyball, and many more. Why not sign up for some tryouts?

4. Study strategically

Studying in a university learning environment means adapting and testing strategies to efficiently navigate and retain academic materials. Find out what works the best for you for each of your classes, so you can make the most of your studies. You can form a study group to help each other with course materials and provide accountabilities. Although it’s easy to think of your phone as a distraction, don’t forget that tracking apps can actually help you stay more productive!

5. Get to know your professors and advisors

Professors are always happy to get to know you better, share their experience and knowledge, guide you through any possible complications you might have in class, and more. There are many benefits to getting to know your professors beyond increasing your grades – they can help you find a research position or internship, mentor you and write letters of recommendation.

Keep these tips in mind when you start classes, but more importantly, don’t forget to have fun along the way. Take as many opportunities as you can to enjoy the social side of student life, because you will be working hard to complete your degree and secure a graduate job!
