Are you interested in photography? The University of New York in Prague’s Study Abroad program offers a Digital Photography course in the fall for students seeking a Bachelor’s Degree. The course introduces the operational and creative skills that beginner’s need when starting digital photography. When finishing the course, students will be able to properly use all of the digital camera’s features, talk about the nature of photographs and describe their own work, and examine different photographic styles.

The Digital Photography course will offer lessons on both the technical and creative aspects of photography, and will provide students with a view of the different photographers and movements involved in the art.

Prague has a number of photography galleries placed throughout the city.  One of the most notable is the Leica Gallery.  It has been running since 2002 and focuses exclusively on displaying photography.  Their aim is to show works from Czech and Slovak contemporary artists, and often promote them abroad.  The gallery fosters and looks for young talented photographers and holds a tradition of showing works from photography students under the title of FRAME in their exhibitions. They also offer debates, lectures, discussions and workshops that are open to the public.

The Prague House of Photography traces its roots back to 1989, where it operated as an association of photographers, called The Caucus of Free Photography. Their goal was to find spaces for photography exhibitions. The settled on a location on Revoluční Street in a building established from a project by the Prague Municipal Council and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.  The gallery holds exhibitions by multiple artists at a time of different mediums, in addition to photographs.

Czech Photo started the The Nikon Photo Gallery with the support of Nikon.  This gallery exhibits renowned Czech photographers, but also shows works from photographers around the world.  They also arrange lectures and workshops.

In addition to the galleries that Prague has to offer, there are a number of photography exhibitions running at any given time.  You may want to pay particular attention to DOX, the Centre for Contemporary Art, if you have a taste for more modern or experimental types of photography.  Galerie Rudolfinum is tried and true when it comes to rotating exhibitions showcasing different mediums and styles.
