Are you considering study abroad in Prague? For centuries, Prague has been affectionately dubbed the Heart of Europe, the City of a Hundred Spires or even Praga Mater Urbium – the Mother of Cities – and its unique charm has recently earned it the title of the 6th best destination in the world!
Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel site, recently carried out a worldwide survey of the best places on Earth. Among thousands of breathtaking destinations, Prague achieved an incredible 6th place, leaving spectacular cities such as New York, Barcelona, Hong Kong and Rome in its wake. The only higher-ranked destinations were London, Istanbul, Marrakech, Paris and Siem Reap.
Can you imagine what it would be like to live, work and study in such a unique city? Prague’s singular charm comes from more than the beautiful architecture, evocative atmosphere and reasonable prices. Tripadvisor lists 1967 unique attractions, historical and modern. All are easily accessible from the University of New York in Prague, using Prague’s convenient and economical public transport system, which covers the entire city with a network of trams, metro, buses, suburban rail – even water taxis and a funicular! The transport system runs all night, and UNYP night owls will appreciate the main interchange at I.P. Pavlova, just around the corner from our main campus and student apartments. Here are just a few of the things that our students love to do in Prague:
1. Old Town and the Castle
Prague’s historic downtown is a stone’s throw from our campus. Walking through narrow, winding streets full of well-preserved Baroque buildings is an unforgettable experience. In Old Town Square, you can enjoy seasonal markets offering traditional Bohemian cuisine and handcrafted souvenirs while waiting for the unique astronomical clock to count down the hours.
2. Bike Tours
If you want to explore the city quickly, Prague offers a great selection of city tours: walking tours, hop-on-hop-off bus tours, vintage car tours and boat tours. However, to truly get a feel for the city, nothing beats seeing it on two wheels. A professional bike tour guide will take you off the beaten track to places where motor vehicles cannot go – with plenty of stops for snacks, drinks, and the odd selfie!
3. Naplavka Riverbank
The tour groups may be surging over Charles Bridge for the best view of Prague Castle, but locals know that there’s nowhere better to enjoy the long, lazy summer evenings than down on the Naplavka Riverbank. Wander, cycle or skate along the riverside path while nibbling at delicious street food and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and live music. The moored party boats cater to all tastes, from avant-garde theatre to fine Italian dining.
4. Room Escape Games
Room escape games are a hot trend with locals and tourists alike, and come in many themes – gory, scary, historical, futuristic. You are locked in a themed room with your friends. While a ticking clock counts down the minutes, you must find clues, open locks, crack codes and solve puzzles. Will you beat the clock and escape in time?
5. Outdoor Cinema
For Prague’s cinephiles, every summer is an open-air film festival, with a dozen outdoor cinemas in various locations around the city. There’s something for every taste – you can watch Czech classics, Hollywood blockbusters, cult favorites and art-house obscurities under the stars.
As you can see, studying abroad in Prague could be the most fascinating and enriching experience of your life. Curious about your study options now? Check out your study options at UNYP, the best private university in Prague. And take the next step – you are ready!
